About the Author

Bob Preston is an entrepreneur, former Silicon Valley Chief Marketing Officer, Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, ACSM Personal Trainer (in progress, specialty 50+ adults), consultant, podcaster, storyteller, and mountain-life enthusiast. He is also the founder of The Retired Mindset, a platform dedicated to helping people redefine retirement and design a more meaningful next chapter through the lens of holistic longevity.

With a BA in Psychology, an MA in Professional Psychology, and an MBA in Marketing, Bob has spent decades operating in high-performance professional environments. His career included executive leadership roles in Silicon Valley with publicly traded companies, followed by successful real estate entrepreneurship and consulting. Like many ambitious professionals, he spent years pursuing growth, achievement, financial success, and external validation.

His Journey

From the outside, life looked successful. Beneath that success, however, the costs were accumulating. Long hours, chronic stress, relentless performance pressure, and the gradual erosion of personal well-being took their toll. The COVID era accelerated this reckoning. Bob found himself burned out, emotionally depleted, and increasingly disconnected from the energetic, optimistic, deeply social father and grandfather he once knew himself to be. He often describes this season as feeling like Atlas—carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders while supporting his family, including four children and four grandchildren.

At one point, the warning signs became impossible to ignore. He was struggling to stay focused on his business. Relationships were strained. He had gained weight and fallen out of shape. Internally and physically, something had to change. That realization became the catalyst for one of the most profound transitions of his life: stepping away from the career identity that had defined him for decades and taking a leap of faith into retirement.

What followed was not immediate bliss. The first six months of retirement became what he now describes as a “free fall.” Without the constant demands and structure of work, he was forced to confront a difficult question: Who am I without my career?

His Transformation

That question marked the beginning of transformation. Through intentional work on physical health, mental clarity, relationships, purpose, community, and spiritual grounding, Bob rebuilt his life from the inside out. He improved his health, reestablished meaningful routines, cultivated mindfulness and gratitude practices, discovered new communities, and—most importantly—rediscovered himself.

A pivotal chapter in this reinvention unfolded in Mammoth Lakes, where his family has owned a second home for more than two decades. What began as a vacation destination evolved into a true community. There, he found renewed purpose working with Mammoth Mountain’s safety and host teams, becoming part of an extraordinary group of active, engaged individuals committed to service, lifelong learning, and helping others. He also dedicated time to meaningful causes beyond the mountain, including helping to establish the Wilsonia Historic District Trust in the western Sierra Nevada, serving in a leadership role in a college parent group, and contributing locally through civic service in his hometown of Del Mar, CA.

Through these experiences, he observed something profound: many of the happiest, healthiest, and most vibrant retirees shared common traits. They stayed active. They remained curious. They cultivated community. They contributed. They maintained purpose. And they never stopped growing. These observations, combined with his own personal transformation, became foundational to his philosophy of retirement and longevity – The Seven Trails to Holistice Longevity.

His Authenticity

Bob’s greatest strength as an author and guide is authenticity. Though increasingly recognized as an expert in holistic longevity, he does not position himself as a guru with all the answers. Instead, he shows up as a trusted guide—a trail companion who has walked difficult terrain and now helps others navigate their own path forward.

His message resonates because it is grounded in honesty. He speaks candidly about burnout, self-doubt, identity loss, loneliness, reinvention, purpose, and joy. He understands that retirement is not simply a financial milestone or an extended vacation. It is a profound life transition—one that can bring both freedom and uncertainty.

Bob believes retirement can become one of the most meaningful and fulfilling chapters of life—but only if approached with intention. His mission is simple yet powerful: to help people not merely survive retirement but truly thrive within it. Because The Retired Mindset is more than a platform, concept, and philosophy. It is an invitation. And more personally, it is a trail Bob has walked himself—one he now helps others navigate with greater clarity, vitality, purpose, and hope.

The Birth of The Retired Mindset

In retirement, Bob reconnected with a longtime creative passion: podcasting. That spark led to the creation of The Retired Mindset, which began as a passion project and quickly evolved into a mission-driven platform focused on helping people navigate the emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual dimensions of retirement and reinvention. Through his podcast, coaching, writing, and speaking, he has explored conversations with psychologists, wellness experts, entrepreneurs, scientists, high performers, and retirees who have successfully reinvented themselves. These conversations reinforced a core insight that now anchors all his work: Thriving in retirement is never about just one variable. It requires holistic alignment. That insight became the foundation for the TRM Momentum™ model and the Seven Trails to Holistic Longevity framework outlined in this book.
