Bob Preston (Host) Speaking:
Now, here’s a glimpse into my current retired mindset. And I believe these can apply to every person, regardless of financial resources and health status. I’ve got renewed clarity and focus. I remind myself daily to be present and engaged and to live with intent. Most importantly, I’ve rekindled my soul, spirituality, and vitality in connections with family and friends, rediscovering pieces of myself that I lost along life’s journey.
Welcome to the Retired Mindset Podcast, where soul meets body. Hosted by me, Bob Preston. Embrace the retirement journey of transformative insights, inspiring conversations, with new episodes produced weekly.
I hope you’re having an amazing kickoff to the fall season. It’s been a beautiful day here in Del Mar, California, this fall, my favorite time of year. Now it’s been a minute since I’ve posted or published anything professional, mainly because, well, I’m pretty much a retired ski bum at this point in my life. Yep, officially living the dream, as they say. Some self-deprecating humor there, but the ski bum part, well, it’s kind of true. I still dabble in a lot of side hustles. My heart, however, is now dedicated to volunteering, working with incredible groups of people who are committed to giving back. But if you’re hearing this, you’ve already figured out that I’ve been working on and brainstorming a new passion project in stealth mode for about a year. And I am here to tell you about The Retired Mindset, now streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart, and YouTube. It’s also available on our new website, TheRetiredMindset.com, along with a wealth of other great information and resources. So check that out too.
Now, many of you may remember my highly ranked podcast in the property management industry called Property Management Brainstorm. Now, although I have moved on from that industry and stepped back from actively posting and podcasting there, this new concept has been bubbling up in my mind for quite some time, and I am barely able to contain my excitement. So let’s first set the record straight. The retired mindset is not about crunching numbers or managing finances and retirement. There are countless podcasts already tackling that topic; trust me, hundreds. Instead, this podcast is all about living your best life in retirement. We’ll dive into mental health, staying young at heart, and maintaining connections during what I like to call the third trimester of life’s journey.
My vision is to help you, both men and women, unlock your full potential, reconnect with what makes you uniquely you, and embrace aging while thriving as you transition away from your career. Retirement has opened my eyes in ways I never imagined. My experience in retirement reminds me of the Death Cab for Cutie song Soul Meets Body. If you’re not familiar with the song, try searching for it on Google or iTunes and give it a listen. It feels like I’ve stepped into a new version of myself. Let’s call it Bobby P 2.0. I’ve rediscovered my passions and embraced the joy of living in the moment. One of my favorite podcasts is called “I’ve Had It”. So flippin’ funny, always cracks me up, and addresses things that the hosts find annoying. And you know what I’ve had it with? I’ve had it with the term “golden years”. Seriously, it’s time to ditch that phrase. It perpetuates ageism and stereotypes about retirement as a time of decline. For me, retirement is about joy, growth, and reclaiming my humanity, reconnecting with the essence of who I am. Now, a lot of people will ask me, “Do you have enough to keep you busy in retirement”? And my answer is absolutely; I have so much on my plate that I struggle to find enough hours in the day to get it all done. It’s like a veil has been lifted, allowing me to see life through a new, vibrant lens. Now, I get it, some people love their work. Bob Weir from The Grateful Dead, who is nearly 80, still rocks it every night and proclaims that retirement is not an option. That’s his passion. And I say go for it and stick with it. I also understand and empathize that some individuals face financial constraints and health issues that prevent them from retiring or living to their fullest potential. These realities have hit close to home for me, as I see friends and family navigating these challenges every day. But if you’re contemplating retirement or have taken that leap, don’t settle for merely existing in your golden years.
Now, here’s a glimpse into my current retired mindset. And these can apply to every person, regardless of financial resources and health status. I’ve got renewed clarity and focus. I remind myself daily to be present and engaged and to live with intent. Most importantly, I’ve rekindled my soul, spirituality, and vitality in connections with family and friends, rediscovering pieces of myself that I lost along life’s journey. Soul meets body, if you will. We’ll explore not just my experiences, but also feature inspiring guests and experts sharing their retirement journeys as well: research and the sources of their joy. Yes, I’ll share some personal stories along the way that might make me feel a bit vulnerable, but hey, that’s part of the adventure.
Now, let me clarify a few things. I’m not at all qualified to be a financial advisor. I’m not a life coach or a therapist, and in no way am I trying to be some sort of metaphysical guru. I sincerely don’t want you to think that I’m trying or pretending to be any of those because I’m not. I’m just an ordinary guy who’s found joy in retirement, and I’m eager to share that experience with anyone interested. To all my retired friends out there, let’s embark on this exciting podcast journey together to explore the incredible potential of our humanity in retirement. And for those of you still in the workforce, I applaud you all too. This podcast will be a valuable resource for setting the right expectations and mindset as you begin to plan for your retirement.
