The Remarkable Number Seven

EPISODE NOTES

Send Us a Voicemail!

The Number seven keeps showing up in my life, and it’s not just a quirky coincidence. I’m Bob Preston, founder of The Retired Mindset, and I share the true story behind why my approach to aging well and thriving in retirement naturally formed around seven core “trails” to holistic longevity.

I share why the number seven keeps showing up in my life and how it becomes the backbone of The Retired Mindset. I explain how my first months of retirement feel difficult, then how a clear framework helps me rebuild purpose and improve my health span.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

• The moment “seven” starts appearing in nature, culture, and my work
• Why longevity means living fully, not just living longer
• The July 7th writing session that sparks the book title
• The tough first six months after retirement and the shift in month seven
• Coincidence vs synchronicity vs intuition vs divine design
• Why seven often signals wholeness across history and belief systems
•The seven trails: soul, body, vitality, nutrition, purpose, connection, spirituality

The spark hits while I’m writing my book at 7 a.m. on July 7th, and it pulls me back to a harder truth: the first six months after I retired are rough. The routines are gone, my identity feels shaky, and I have to relearn what purpose looks like in the second half of life. Then the seventh month arrives and something clicks. That turning point becomes the start of a framework focused on healthspan, not just lifespan, so retirement becomes more than “time off” and turns into a chapter with meaning, energy, and direction.

I also dig into why humans have been drawn to the number seven for thousands of years, from the seven days in a week to the seven colors of the rainbow, and why it often symbolizes completeness. Whether you see that as synchronicity, intuition, or divine design, the value is practical: it gives us a simple way to organize the parts of life that actually make retirement satisfying.

You’ll walk away with the seven trails I use to coach and live by: soul, body, vitality, nutrition, purpose, connection, and spirituality.

Noticing Seven Everywhere

Bob 0:12

The number seven is remarkable. When I started building The Retired Mindset, something strange started happening to me. I kept seeing that number seven everywhere in nature and culture, even through my podcast and the work I’ve been doing around living my best life in retirement. Hey, I’m Bob Preston, founder of The Retired Mindset, where I help people 50-plus master the art and science of aging well through these seven trails to holistic longevity. The brief story I told to start is how my journey became my seven trails: soul, body, vitality, nutrition, purpose, connection, and spirituality. Because longevity, to me, isn’t about living longer; it’s about the whole person and learning how to live more fully in the years ahead. What I call health span. Seven trails, one journey, limitless possibilities.

The July 7 Writing Spark

So, why seven? There’s actually a longer story behind that. I didn’t set out to build the retired mindset around the number seven. It wasn’t a branding exercise; it just kind of happened. I didn’t sit down one day and say, seven is a cool number; let’s figure out how to make that work. It happened exactly the opposite way. Because I had started writing my book, and I one day I was working on the introduction to the book, which had yet been named. And at the end of that two-hour session, I was inspired enough to come up with the title, The Retired Mindset: Seven Trails to Holistic Longevity. So here’s how that happened. I woke up one morning this past July with one of those burst-of-inspiration days where you just need to get coffee, sit down, and everything starts flowing. It was around 7 a.m. Words were just coming pretty easily out of my written hand. Then, for some reason, I looked at the date. It was July 7th. So there I was writing the book at 7 a.m. on the seventh day of the seventh month of the year. And I remember just kind of thinking, wow, that’s really weird.

When Retirement Finally Clicked

Bob 2:23

But then I started thinking about my own retirement journey, where the first six months after I retired were incredibly difficult. And it wasn’t until my seventh month of retirement that things really began to click and change for me. That’s when I started finding new meaning, new purpose, and new curiosity about what this next chapter of my life might actually become. Now, do I think there’s some magical force controlling my life through the number seven? I don’t think so. And that’s not really the point, but that is where it became meaningful to me because I didn’t start with the number seven and create seven categories just out of convenience. So, you know, maybe you see my experience with a number seven as coincidence. Maybe you call it synchronicity, maybe it’s intuition, maybe it’s divine design. That’s entirely up to you.

Why Humans Keep Choosing Seven

Bob 3:17

But I did some research into the number seven, and I found some interesting things: human beings have been drawn to it for thousands of years, right? You got seven days in a week, seven days of creation, seven colors in the rainbow, seven wonders of the ancient world, seven notes in the traditional music scale, and across cultures, religions, philosophy, and human history, seven has repeatedly been associated with things like completeness, wholeness, and bringing different parts together into one. So I started with my own experience and asked some questions. What had gone wrong for me when I first retired? What was missing? What was helping me come alive again in retirement? And more importantly, what does it really mean to thrive in the second half of life? So I tried organizing those ideas and thoughts in several different ways.

The Seven Trails And Next Steps

Bob 4:14

But over time, they naturally resolved into seven areas of my life. Those again are soul, body, vitality, nutrition, purpose, connection, and spirituality. And that’s when the idea of seven trails to holistic longevity really came together. Seven trails, one journey, limitless possibilities. I’m Bobby P, and this is The Retired Mindset, where soul meets body.
